Overview
Croda required a large-scale bio-fermentation facility to reinforce its unique leadership in the beauty and personal care industry. Key requirements included a 30,000-litre manufacturing capacity capable of processing marine and thermophilic organisms while maintaining continuous production in adjacent live operational areas during construction and commissioning.
Technical mastery
We delivered one of Europe’s largest fermentation and downstream processing footprints, engineered for high-performance mission-critical manufacturing. The facility integrates complex technical workflows with a semi-automated distributive control system (DCS) for adaptive recipe management.
-
Process infrastructure: A 30,000-litre batch manufacturing process featuring a mix of conventional stainless steel and corrosion-resistant glass-lined fermentation vessels.
-
Downstream processing: Integration of a centrifuge, homogeniser, and filter press to refine raw ingredients before dispatch.
-
Sterilisation systems: Advanced clean-in-place (CIP) and steam-in-place (SIP) provisions enable effective system sterilisation, minimising disassembly requirements and increasing practicality.
-
Control & automation: A distributed control system ensures the facility can respond to evolving manufacturing strategies through flexible recipe management.
-
Site integration: Precise project management allowed for the integration of the new facility into a live production area without disrupting existing manufacturing processes.
Benefits
Our lifecycle-led approach delivered a future-proof facility that aligns technical precision with Croda’s long-term business goals for sustainable innovation.
Key results:
-
Operational flexibility: The combination of stainless steel and glass-lined vessels provides the adaptability to meet diverse current and future client requirements.
-
Maximised usability: The "Inside-Out" design philosophy focused on user workflows and automated CIP/SIP systems to increase operational efficiency and practicality.
