How Equans Sci-Tech is redefining technical learning and development
Building a technical workforce that actually knows its craft
At Equans Sci-Tech, we are committed to creating an environment where everyone can continuously grow, whether they are building their technical expertise, developing as future leaders, or advancing their professional qualifications. We recognise that career development takes many forms and provides a wide range of opportunities to support our people at every stage of their journey.
Our approach goes beyond traditional learning programmes. From professional certifications and industry qualifications supported through dedicated funding, to leadership and management development, mentoring, on-the-job learning and knowledge-sharing initiatives, we aim to equip our teams with the skills and experiences they need to succeed.
Learning and Development is an important part of this broader commitment. Between January 2025 and April 2026, our Learning & Development strategy was designed to ensure that development opportunities are practical, accessible, and closely aligned with the realities of our specialist technical environment. Our goal is simple: when our people invest time in learning, they return with knowledge, skills, and capabilities that can be applied immediately to their projects, their teams, and their careers.
Exceeding industry standards
Our strategy is working: we currently maintain an internal Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 55 for our training programmes, a figure considered excellent within our industry. Furthermore, 9% of our workforce are currently in ‘earn and learn’ roles, nearly double the 5% Club industry benchmark

From apprentice to innovator: The story of safety lens
At Equans Sci-Tech, our training programmes empower people to develop new skills and use them to solve complex, real-world challenges.
A great example is Atajan, a Business Intelligence Analyst who applied the skills gained through his Upskill Data Apprenticeship to lead the development of Safety Lens. Built in-house using Microsoft Power Platform, Safety Lens is a bespoke digital ecosystem that is transforming how we manage health and safety.
By combining QR-code-enabled reporting with AI-powered dashboards, Safety Lens has made it easier for our teams to identify risks, share observations and take action. To date, more than 3,000 safety observations have been recorded, with an impressive 96% on-time action closeout rate.
It is a powerful example of how investing in people can inspire innovation and deliver measurable business impact.
Securing the future:
We recognise that the first year of any role can be the most challenging. While recruitment costs continue to rise across the sector, we have chosen a different path: investing heavily in the first 12 months of the employee journey.
By partnering with Workelo, we provide our newcomers with a structured, intuitive onboarding experience that gives them the "keys" to the enterprise from day one. This focus on support and integration has led to an industry-leading retention rate: in 2026, In Q1 and Q2 of 2026, only 1% of our employees left within their first year.
We believe this is a "great bet" for the business. When compared to the significant cost of re-recruiting and retraining, our investment in people’s happiness and professional clarity pays for itself many times over. We don't just hire for a job; we invest in a career, ensuring our engineers and leaders have the confidence and support to excel on the most complex projects.
Looking outward
Our commitment to skills doesn't stop at our office doors. We regularly work with schools and colleges like Hopwood Hall College and Liverpool UTC, to delivering career talks and STEM events like the Girls Believe Academy. Local educators have told us these sessions are "immensely valuable" for helping students see a real future for themselves in engineering and construction.
