Earlier this year, we marked Women in Engineering Day by celebrating the vital contributions women make to the engineering sector and specifically to our teams here at Equans Sci-Tech. Across the business, we took the time to recognise the value of diverse collaboration and the importance of creating inclusive spaces where every professional has the opportunity to thrive.
As part of our campaign, we shared an insightful video conversation between Zoe McGrath and David Greatorex from our CAD team. Together, they reflected on their experience working side by side, how the industry has evolved, and why diversity in engineering is more than just a metric: it is a necessity for innovation.
Collaboration in action: from drawing to installation
Zoe and David have collaborated on a wide range of complex projects, from high-tech pharmaceutical facilities to mission-critical data centers. Their message was clear: strong teamwork and early collaboration lead to superior outcomes for our clients and our colleagues.
"We get to see things from the initial set of drawings right through to the final installation," said Zoe. "It is incredibly rewarding to see the finished project when it has followed our designs precisely."
David emphasised the operational benefits of this synergy: "If you start the teamwork early on, it progresses naturally through the job. It makes everything easier down the line, especially for the site teams who are bringing those drawings to life."
Challenging stereotypes and building confidence
Zoe also shared her perspective on how the industry is shifting and why dedicated awareness days remain important for the current landscape.
"I don’t feel like it is stereotypically a man’s job anymore; it is more diverse than it has ever been," she noted. "But we still need to push to remove the remaining biases and stereotypes."
Senior Project Engineer Rebecca Roberts echoed this sentiment, offering practical advice to women starting their journey in the field: "Prioritise your goals and align yourself with people who want to support them. Build a network and a team you can truly rely on."
Supporting women in STEM: our 2026 commitment
At Equans Sci-Tech, we are committed to creating an environment where women can build long-term, rewarding careers. Whether through our early careers programs, mentoring initiatives, or leadership development, we are actively helping women excel in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.
We know that diverse teams are not just fairer; they are more resilient and creative. This is why we continue to work toward our Gender+ strategy, which includes a target of 20% female representation in management roles by 2026.
As Zoe aptly put it: "Eventually, we won’t need a Women in Engineering Day, because it will just be the new normal."
